Choose to visit, Mount Lavinia. Largely a middle class residential suburb, the stretch of beach has been popular with tourists and locals alike. Mount Lavinia beach offers many restaurants for the beach goers to wine and dine in, with some of them turning in to mini clubs at night.
The city's name is built around what is now the Mount Lavinia hotel which used to be the original residence of Sir Thomas Maitland who was the Governor General of Ceylon from 1805-1811. It is said that the mansion was named after his beautiful lover Lovina who used to visit him by way of a secret tunnel.
