    The city's name is built around what is now the Mount Lavinia hotel which used to be the original residence of Sir Thomas Maitland who was the Governor General of Ceylon from 1805-1811. It is said that the mansion was named after his beautiful lover Lovina who used to visit him by way of a secret tunnel.
